Presentation Watercolours were painted to tempt the clients and to show them what to expect.
The Whitefriars Glasshouse was founded in the early 18th Century and bought by entrepreneur James Powell in 1834. His three sons established a stained glass department in 1844 and with assistance of Charles Winston (1814-1864) created glass that was as close as possible in texture and colour to mediaeval stained glass. The quality of their techniques attracted artists of the calibre of Edward Burne-Jones (between 1857-1861) Henry Holiday and Walter Crane. A Christian Society, World Fairs and an aggressive marketing department meant few churches, institutional buildings and indeed houses across the British Empire, and North America, escaped a Powell window. The memorialisation of WWI, for which many of these Presentation Watercolours were painted, led to a burst of activity in the 1920s. Powell and Sons continued to make stained glass until 1973.
These are all mounted in acid free board, cut to the shape of the window. Postage and packing to UK addresses is included for these until Christmas. We can quote for sending works internationally.
