IN THE WEEKEND WINDOW …

Stanley Anderson C.B.E. R.A. R.E. (1884 - 1966)

Stanley Anderson was one of the undisputed greats of the Print Revival, and his greatest acheivement undoubtedly the series of prints he made of craftspeople and agricultural workers in the Oxfordshire countryside from 1934-1953.

Dismayed, and angered by the relentless rise of mechanisation in farming and other countryside industries, his prints are a devotional record of crafts and traditions that were disappearing before his eyes, and of the local men and women who plied them.

So here we see the 82 year old saddler William Bowl repairing the lining of a horse’s collar in his shop in Witney Street, Burford. And Ernest (Ernie) Sims (b.1894) making hay rakes by hand as his family’s firm had done since 1820 …

‘People had little appreciation of traditionally made articles and society had little sympathy with the idea that making everyday things by hand could provide a living as well as a fulfilling way of life’. (R Ingles on Anderson in ‘Tools and Trades’ Vol.6, 1990).
