BURNE-JONES Sir Edward Coley A.R.A. (1833-1898)
Study of a standing, draped figure. Black and white chalks on tan paper. Signed and indistinctly date in white chalk ‘E.B.J. 18(?64 or 66)’ and (later) ‘E.B.J. to (drawing of an owl)’ in pencil. This study may be preparatory to ‘The Story of St George’, the series of seven paintings executed for Myles Birket-Foster’s dining-room at Witley. Charles Augustus Howell (c.1840-1890) was nicknamed ‘Owl’ after Fanny Cornforth’s cockney pronunciation of his name. 12.5x7 inches.
