COTMAN Miles Edmund (1810-1858)
The Rubens Lion. Chalk, watercolour and gouache on tan paper. Circa 1840. Inscribed or signed. 11.5x18 inches. A copy of the Rubens drawing of a lion bequeathed to the British Museum by Richard Payne Knight in 1824. Miles Edmund Cotman was his father John Sell Cotman’s assistant at Kings College from 1836 and following JSC’s death in 1842 took over as Master of Landscape Drawing until 1852. It is probable that this drawing formed part of his teaching practice. We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox for his thoughts on this work.
