The Palace of Westminster on fire, night of 16th - 17th October 1834. Pencil, brush, ink and gouache on tan paper. Inscribed verso ‘The fire thus avoiding it, burned towards / the river side – painted a spectacle, as viewed from / Lambeth, and in as lovely a moonlight night as could / be conceived, “horribly beautiful” / from the Morning Herald / Friday Oct.17 / 34’. Provenance: A scrapbook of mid-19th century sketches probably by a journalistic illustrator (Cf. No.98). 8.25x10 inches.
