Twopenny Family (Nineteenth Century)
Lincolnshire; Stamford, the spire of St Mary's from St Mary's Street, the Stamford Hotel (built 1829) on the right. Pencil and sepia wash. Inscribed 'Rev. W Twopenny' (strengthened) and 'Rev. W Twepnenny' in a later hand. Although William Twopenny is known to have made many antiquarian drawings (the BM has a collection), he was a solicitor and not a Reverend. However, his brother the Rev. David Twopenny was also an amateur artist. David Twopenny married the youngest daughter of his uncle, the Rev. Richard Twopenny at Little Casterton, near Stanford, in 1834. Provenance: The Newall Collection, Christies, 13, 14 December 1979, Album, lot 249. Inscribed in the album 'From Miss Alleyne's Collection 1945'.
